Ivorian winger Lasso Coulibaly has left AJ Auxerre to join Danish club Viborg on a season-long loan. The deal includes an undisclosed option to buy.

This move comes as Auxerre, 18th in Ligue 1 with 0 points after two losses, looks for solutions following a tough start to the season. The Burgundy club has conceded eight goals while scoring only three and faces a difficult away trip to 4th-placed Lyon this Thursday, September 4th. The squad is also dealing with injuries to several players including A. Diousse, S. Fofana, B. Okoh, M. Senaya, and F. Sierralta, complicating the manager's selection.

Lasso Coulibaly, 23, joined Auxerre in the summer of 2024 from Norwegian side Nordjaelland. His time in Burgundy has been injury-plagued. After a dream start with a goal on his Ligue 1 debut against Nice on August 18, 2024, in a 2-1 win, he suffered a serious knee injury just one week later, rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament. He only returned to training with the professional squad in May 2025.

Last season, he made just 17 league appearances, only one of them as a starter. Shoulder and ankle problems, along with inconsistent form, limited his playing time.

This season, his involvement has been minimal. He came on as a substitute in the heavy 5-2 defeat at RC Lens on the opening day. He was then left out of the squad entirely for the home match against Angers, which ended in a 1-3 loss. This lack of immediate playing prospects led the club to find him a new destination to regain rhythm.

This move to Denmark represents a chance to revive his career. Viborg offers him a platform in the Danish Superliga to prove his worth over a full season. For Auxerre, the operation trims the squad and could generate future income if the purchase option is triggered. The club is currently six points behind leaders Monaco and must focus on its upcoming league challenges, the schedule for which is on our fixtures page.

Auxerre is entering a critical period with a squad weakened by injuries and a precarious league position. The loan of Coulibaly is part of a broader squad management strategy. The team will need to rely on its other forwards to improve its goal difference, which currently stands at -5. The next fixture away to Lyon, scheduled for September 4, 2026, will be a key test to reverse the trend and climb out of the relegation zone.
