AJ Auxerre and coach Will Still are in deep crisis after a catastrophic start to the Ligue 1 season. The Burgundy club, bottom of the table with 0 points, has conceded eleven goals in just three matchdays, the worst defensive beginning in the championship for decades according to a Foot Mercato report.

The 3-1 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais on Friday night confirmed the team's severe defensive woes, despite a goal from Southampton loanee Cameron Archer. AJA now finds itself nine points behind leaders AS Monaco and shows a recent form of three consecutive losses (LLL).

The issue is systemic. Will Still acknowledged it after the match, citing a collective error on a set-piece. "We concede another very annoying goal from a set piece, when we are four against one," said the English coach. Nouirou Ahamada's loss of possession leading to Lyon's third goal exemplifies this fragility.

This defensive debacle contrasts with visible offensive promise in the defeats to Lens (2-5), Angers (1-3) and Lyon. The team has scored four goals, but its defensive record of eleven conceded creates a -7 goal difference, the worst in the league. The injuries list doesn't help, with Assane Dioussé, Axel Tuanzebe, Fredrik Oppegård, Marvin Senaya and Sekou Fofana currently unavailable.

AJA underwent a major overhaul with twelve external recruits this summer, for significant investment. The arrivals of Arthur Piedfort (5.5 million euros) and Danny Namaso (5 million) were among the most expensive. Paul Nardi, Axel Tuanzebe, Pierre Ekwah and Cameron Archer also joined the club.

This wave of new faces, affecting about twenty people including staff, requires adaptation time. Will Still admits it: "We knew we weren't going to get everything right overnight." Tuanzebe's absence, not yet qualified against Lyon, deprived the defence of a key element. Squad cohesion, visible on our squad page, is an urgent project.

The schedule offers an immediate chance for reaction with two consecutive home games. The first is important, against 17th-placed OGC Nice on September 12, 2026. A direct duel against another struggling rival. This will be followed by the visit of Stade Brestois.

These two matches at the Abbé-Deschamps are presented as finals to reverse the momentum. The current standings, available in our standings, show the urgency of the situation. Only a victory could ease the growing tensions around Will Still's project and his technical direction.

The record of three matches, three defeats and eleven goals conceded places this beginning among the worst in recent Ligue 1 history. Only SC Bastia in 1985-1986 did worse, conceding twelve goals in the same period.

This unflattering comparison underlines the scale of the challenge. The defence must pull itself together quickly to prevent the situation from becoming unmanageable. Detailed statistics of this black series are available on our stats page.

The pressure is now at its peak on Will Still and his players before hosting Nice, a match scheduled for September 12, 2026 at the Abbé-Deschamps.
