Will Still, the new coach of AJ Auxerre, has addressed criticism surrounding his decision to join the club. Despite offers from other teams, he insists his choice was well-considered and driven by personal and professional reasons.
Why Auxerre?
Will Still received offers from other clubs, including Lorient, Bristol City (English Championship), Paris FC, and Nantes. However, he chose Auxerre for its human scale and accessibility. 'I followed my instinct. Auxerre is a human-sized club, and that’s what attracted me,' he told L’Équipe.
Reactions and challenges
Some media outlets suggested this was a 'plan B' for Still, but he rejects that notion. 'People don’t know anything. They said I needed to redeem myself, but that’s not true. I had other options, but I took my time,' he added. The club finished 16th in Ligue 1 last season with 24 points (5 wins, 9 draws, 15 losses in 29 matches).
Ambitions for the upcoming season
Still emphasized that he wanted to take the time to properly prepare for his new adventure. 'I’m only 33 years old, and I want to do things right. Auxerre is a club with great potential, and I’m determined to help it progress,' he concluded. Auxerre’s next match is scheduled for December 5, 2026, against Lille, currently 3rd in the standings.
