AJ Auxerre suffered a third consecutive Ligue 1 defeat on Friday 4 September, losing 3-1 away to Olympique Lyonnais at the Groupama Stadium. Le Progrès reports that Will Still's men, sitting 18th in the table with zero points, were outplayed despite a first-half goal from Morgan Archer.

The match was characterised by the technical and physical dominance of Paulo Fonseca's Lyon from the kick-off. Referee Ruddy Buquet showed the first yellow card to Auxerre midfielder Théo Piedfort in the 26th minute. One minute later, Lyon defender Bacher opened the scoring with a header from a corner. The advantage doubled four minutes later through Athekame, capitalising on a poor clearance. Auxerre reacted against the run of play before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Morgan Archer reduced the deficit with a well-placed shot, offering some hope to the travelling fans among the 36,278 spectators.

The second half confirmed Lyon's superiority. Forward Ernest Nuamah sealed the match's fate in the 53rd minute by beating goalkeeper Aly Diop. The Auxerre side, which lined up with a defence of Sy, Makosso, Legros and Akpa, was under constant pressure. The match statistics are stark: Lyon had 63% possession, 21 shots to Auxerre's 8, and an expected goals (xG) value of 2.76 against 0.68. Will Still tried to react by bringing on Mandengue, Zossou and Ekwah in the 66th minute, followed by Faivre and Dioubaté later, but failed to turn the tide.

This defeat is part of a difficult start to the season for AJA, who now have three losses from three matches. The team has conceded eleven goals while scoring only four. They approach their next match, at home to Nice on 12 September, with the urgency to get their first points. The context was also marked by heightened security measures, with the Rhône prefecture announcing: "There will be a greater deployment of police and the mobilisation of CRS 83", following incidents at Lyon's previous match.

Will Still has to deal with several significant absences. The injured Assane Dioussé, Axel Tuanzebe, Fredrik Oppegård, Marvin Senaya and Sekou Fofana were not available for this trip. This defensive fragility, coupled with difficulty creating chances, partly explains the poor results. Supporters can check the full list of available players on the club's squad page. The schedule for upcoming matches, including the clash against Nice, is available on our fixtures page.

AJ Auxerre, with Morgan Archer as the sole scorer, therefore ends the week with a 3-1 loss in Lyon and is already preparing to host OGC Nice next Saturday.
